Box Office News and Tookie Blues
The down-low on movie awards, a country marriage and the end for Tookie Williams.
Tis’ the Season to give out awards in Hollywood and with the early release of “Brokeback Mountain,” it looks as if we already have a MAJOR contender. Hitting New York and Los Angeles over the weekend, the buzz is that everyone took notice and things are good for the stories’ controversial twosome -- a pair of cowboy boot, flannel-shirt wearing, handsome, good-ole’ cowboys who find love in a forbidden place that the majority of society (at one time or another) have called, “unnatural.” However, despite potentially harsh criticism from the audience, so far, they have surprisingly opened their arms and welcomed a gay love story, which goes to show you how much things have changed in a good way since back in them, “judgment days.”

Leading by eight nominations for The Broadcast Film Critics Association, including Best Picture, Best Director, Best Actor/Supporting Actor, “Brokeback’s…” runner-up is the other awesome indie flick, “Crash,” with six nominations.

According to The Los Angeles Film Critics Association, “Brokeback Mountain” has been named Best Pic with its director, Ang Lee, as Best Director. Sharing this opinion is also The American Film Institute, who have called upon “Brokeback Mountain” as being one of the top 10 films of 2005, along with the brilliant film, “Capote,” “Crash,” “The 40-Year-Old Virgin,” “Good Night, and Good Luck,” “A History of Violence,” “King Kong,” “Munich,” “The Squid and the Whale,” and last but not least, “Syriana.”

A standing ovation is in order for all nominees and for hitting the number one spot at the box office this weekend, “The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe” deserves a shout out, as well.

So do Country singers, Garth Brooks and Trisha Yearwood, who were married this Saturday night in Oklahoma. Brooks proposed to Yearwood last May at the Legends of Bronze event, in front of an audience of 7,000. Since then, Trisha said that life for her has, “officially begun.”

Best of luck to the beautiful couple who bring all of us hope in so many ways. And although it hurts me to report that Stanley “Tookie” Williams was denied clemency by Schwarzenegger today, his work with troubled youth in inner cities is only the beginning of what Williams has accomplished since his arrest back in the late 70’s for killing four people during a robbery.

Many of my California peeps have expressed deep sadness and disappointment over the Terminator’s decision but we must remember that this wasn’t an easy thing for him to decide. In addition, with all the good Williams did for his community, his redemption will most likely be the ticket that gets him past the guards standing at the pearly whites. Please everyone, do not fret, Williams will soon return to his eternal paradise where friends, family and the many others who died in battle on the streets of South Central, LA await him.

Goodbye, Tookie Williams. Until we meet again, say hello to Tupac and Biggie Smalls for us! You will be missed.
