| Baseball owners are at it again on a spending spree, or at least one team is. I've found my son's calling: a Major League Baseball Player. |
I have to sit back and laugh at some of the teams in Major League Baseball. You have owners who spend millions at the drop of a hat as if it they were playing Monopoly with their kids. Major League Baseball teams right now are having their winter meetings where trades are discussed and contracts can be offered to players who are free agents. This is the one place where a player can cash in - or as I call it win the lottery. Owners spend a lot, and usually it's the New York Yankees or the Boston Red Sox who spend the most money, but they have been trumped by a team north of the border.
Yes, the Toronto Blue jays have been spending money at a alarming rate. The Blue Jays have picked up some talented players and should definitely challenge the two evil empires of baseball the Yankees and the Red Sox. Now, we all know George Steinbrenner will never let anyone out spend him except maybe Bill Gates. When the smoke clears from the winter meetings I'm sure George will step up to the plate and grab whatever he wants. He usually does.
I've decided when my son grows up (he's only 7 right now) that he's going to be a baseball player. I mean check out some of these figures players are getting:
Bob Wickman: 5 million from the Cleveland Indians. A.J. Burnett: 55 million for 5 years. Paul Konerko: 60 million for 5 years.
Now I know my son probably can't read this column so I will print it out for him and save it. I don't want him to take for granted all the money he can earn as a baseball player. Heck, even if he rides the bench that will be enough to buy dear old dad a new car. |
